Our preschool class focuses on learning English through singing and various activities, like games, art and crafts. The children are introduced to their new school environment through play and exploration, allowing them to easily become confident with their surroundings.
The key factor to our preschool class is that the children are exposed to and learn English in a fun manner. In this class we enjoy lots of exercises that focus on acquisition of vocabulary, pronunciation skills and letter/number recognition. We help the children to develop fine motor skills and practice holding and controlling writing implements.
At Julia International School we take care to provide a comfortable, pressure-free environment by matching toilet training and the like to the individual developmental needs of each child.
Our kindergarten classes run from 9:30am to 3:00pm, Monday to Friday.
Hello, my name is Ross McSweeney and I am the head English teacher at Julia International School. I am originally from Sydney, Australia and have been living in Japan since 2009. I joined JIS more than 12 years ago, fell in love with the school, and have been here every day since! Before I came to JIS I worked as an ESL/ALT teacher at various schools throughout Tokyo, Chiba and Saitama but I always thought that there was something missing in the way that the students were being taught. Upon discovering JIS I knew that this was the school where children could reach their fullest potential. I believe that children learn best when they have stability in their lives, so I make sure that I am here every day for them. My goal is to create a safe, happy, and engaging environment where every child feels valued and excited to learn.
In my free time I dabble in mechanical engineering, creating kinetic sculptures and various mechanical things that bring me joy. I enjoy sharing my creations with various museums throughout the world and helping other designers with their projects. I like to include a bit of this secret life of mine into my school lessons and hopefully get the students interested in all things mechanical, mathematical, robotic and artistic. I have also taught piano in Australia and hope to
About my class –
Our classrooms are bright and colourful, full of English books and games and many interesting things hidden around the classrooms to keep our students entertained and to help them learn to explore their surroundings.
Our week is divided into various subjects which focus on all aspects of learning, plus we have extra activities to help build your child`s world skills and to promote interest in extracurricular activities. We have reading and writing, phonics and pronunciation lessons, maths and music, social studies and science lessons, art and craft as well as French and Japanese lessons held once a week with a native speaker. Our extra lessons involve things like P.E., piano lessons and show and tell time which are used to help our students with motor-skills and to build their confidence. Besides lessons we also help our students with basic skills such as toilet, following instructions, listening, sitting, eating, sharing, playing, manners etc. Whilst this class is for students aged 4-6 years old there is also an option to join early for those students who show that they are ready to move up. Feel free to ask us for more details.
Our teacher is a native English speaker with many, many years experience teaching English as a second language to children all over Japan.
These 90 minute lessons are specially designed to help students who have never spoken English before or are just starting out, students who would like to improve their English skills or for those who would just like to have a fun time learning English in an all English setting.
Our lessons involve set question time, phonics and pronunciation practice, reading and writing plus there is always time for games which help build our students confidence to speak English in front of others. These classes are always fun and you will be surprised at how much your child can improve.
Please contact the school anytime for information about day’s available and English level.
These classes are designed for those students who already have an understanding of English. In these 60 minute lessons we focus on a grammar point, speaking, writing and above all helping the students with what they want or need to learn for themselves and for school such as preperation for the EIKEN exams and interviews. These classes are kept small so that each student gets our full attention so they can really benefit from these lessons.

Mickael sensei, our French native teacher, working in Japan since 2002 as teacher, teaches our French classes twice a week. We have 3 different levels at the moment.☆Kindergarten French Lesson
Beginner’s class for young children (3-6 years old). Lessons are held during school time. The lessons are based on 75% oral and 25% writing. The children learn songs associating easy French and gestures (Titounis, alphabet, and other songs using fingers, animals etc…). Then they study the alphabet and some words starting with the letters of the alphabet. Then they are using flash cards to learn various topics (animals, colours, family, fruits, vegetables, insects, food, etc…). After that, the children work on French worksheets about the days of the week, the months of the year, animals, numbers, colours, etc…) and we can do some games using the cards. Finally, we repeat numbers up to 20 and watch a short anime in French (Petit Ours Brun, Tchoupi, etc…) or read a book in French.
Beginner’s afterschool class as a complement for the previous class. In this class, we start with simple self introduction (Je m’appelle, j’habite, je suis, je parle, j’aime, je n’aime pas). Then we work on the date and the weather. Then we review the alphabet and the children have to ask the question “Qu’est-ce que c’est?” about the pictures, then we use Flashcards to reinforce the vocabulary ability. We use different more advanced topics such as nature, sports, insects, vehicles etc. The children start to make simple sentences such as “j’aime, j’ai, je fais + things”, “Je n’aime pas, je n’ai pas, je ne fais pas + things”. We also work on some more difficult worksheets. Then we end up the class with games such as BINGO or UNO in order to use the words we studied in various fun applications.
The class always starts with the date and the weather, checking the homework and doing a writing spelling test about the previous lesson. Then we study a 2 pages lessons from the book “Ratus et ses amis”, used in the French elementary school system to learn about reading and writing in French. We use a workbook as homework book in addition to the writing notebook. We always end up the class with some oral activities using flashcards or games (vocabulary, uno, etc).
